The Hultån Hatchet (formerly known as Almike) is a compact, yet capable tool designed for camp site work, such as collecting and processing firewood and building shelter. Its hand-forged blade delivers precise, clean cuts, making it ideal for detailed work and outdoor use. Despite its small size, the hatchet feels balanced and responsive, offering excellent control for one-handed swings. The 1 lb. head with its approximately 2.9” long cutting edge is paired with a 16" curved American hickory handle for added reach and comfort. The head features Hults Bruk’s Turpentine pattern, complete with a finger notch for precision carving. Crafted from high-quality Swedish steel at Hults Bruk, this hatchet combines traditional craftsmanship with durability built to last a lifetime. Its main applications are carving, light chopping, and camp work.

Product Overview
The story behind the name: The axe that bears the name “Hultån” pays tribute to the river that powered our mill’s great water wheel. Hultån’s flowing energy was a lifeblood for Hults Bruk, transforming water into force, and that force into tradition and craft. This river, winding through lush forests, was the engine behind centuries of blacksmithing excellence. Owning a Hultån is holding a piece of the unstoppable current that drove our ancestors’ ambition.

Product Highlight
Hults Bruk axe heads are forged from customized high-quality steel, with an alloy specifically engineered for this purpose, providing exceptional strength and performance. The steel is produced completely CO₂-neutral and is fully recyclable.
Each head is hand-forged using the open-die free forging method. The axe head is then hardened and tempered for long-lasting durability. With a hardness of approximately 54–56 HRC on the Rockwell scale, these axe heads offer superior sharpness and edge retention. The cutting edge is hand-ground and polished to ensure precision and reliability with every swing. As one of the final steps in the forging press, each axe head is proudly stamped with the traditional Hults Bruk mark - a symbol of quality and craftsmanship.

The absolute best hatchet I've ever used. Came razor sharp, great shipping and commutation, and the highest quality.
The hatchet is a gift of special meaning that I am sending as a birthday gift to my eldest son. The only issue I have with it is that the finish on the handle is poor and rough to the touch. It also appears that the finish may not have been applied to the entire handle. I love the forged hatchet bit.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful review - and what a meaningful gift idea for your son. We’re truly glad to hear that you love the forged hatchet head.
We’re sorry to hear that the handle finish didn’t meet your expectations. Occasionally, natural wood grain can cause a slightly rough feel. A quick and easy solution is to gently buff the handle with fine steel wool - this will smooth out the surface and enhance the overall feel. After smoothing, you could consider applying a light coat of boiled linseed oil to help protect the wood. We have a small section on our website dedicated to handle treatment: https://us.hultsbruk.com/en-us/blogs/lessons/preserving-the-handle
